Keith Thompson

Board Chairman

Keith’s qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture Business and a Master’s degree in Agriculture Economics. He has experience in business development and nonprofit board service. He is a staple in the Greenwood-Leflore County Community as a State Farm agent and a graduate of the Leflore County School System. As a founding team member, Keith is responsible for learning details of the organization’s proposal to operate a school in the state of Mississippi and advocating on behalf of the proposed school.

Sylvia Burkhead Gray

Board Treasurer

Sylvia’s educational credentials include a Master’s of Business Administration and a Bachelor’s degree in economics. She currently serves as Chief Financial Officer of a network of charter schools in Memphis, TN. Sylvia has executive non-profit experience, school operations experience, and extended experience in fund development and allocation. As a founding team member, Sylvia is responsible for learning details of the organization’s proposal to operate a school in the state of Mississippi and advocating on behalf of the proposed school in this area that is home to her; Sylvia was born and reared in Greenwood. As board treasurer, she has and will continue to provide oversight of the school’s budget and leadership to the board around monthly monitoring of the financial activity.

Emily Cupples

Board Secretary

Emily holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing from the University of Memphis. She has more than five years experience in teacher recruitment and retention strategies, grant writing, strategic communications, partnership cultivation, and team leadership. As a native of the MS Delta (Tunica, MS), Emily understands how very much the lack of educational options for families limits the potential of students. She is an effective and passionate change agent. As a board member, Emily is responsible for advocating on behalf of the proposed school, keeping accurate records of board business, and developing the communications and recruitment plans.

Kathie Golden, Ph.D.

Board Member

Dr. Golden holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science and International Relations. She serves as Director of International Programs at Mississippi Valley State University and as Executive Director of the National Conference of Black Political Scientists. Her global experience include grant writing, program development, community outreach, curriculum development, program evaluation, and leadership. She is an exceptional and respected professor, community advocate, and change agent in the lives of students as evidenced in an article in today’s Greenwood Commonwealth. As a board member, Dr. Golden advocates on behalf of proposed school and offers insight on ensuring students are indeed college and career ready.

McKinley Martin

Board Member

McKinley’s qualifications include a Master’s of Banking Law Studies, a Bachelor’s of Business Administration in Finance, and a Juris Doctorate. Currently, he serves as Senior Attorney at Federal Express in Memphis, TN. He has non-profit board experience and legal expertise. McKinley has a heart for the MS Delta as he’s a native of Clarksdale where he was born, reared and educated. As a founding board member, McKinley is responsible for learning details of the organization’s proposal to operate a school in the state of Mississippi and advocating on behalf of the proposed school. He will offer advisement on legal matters and facility attainment for proposed schools.

Reverend Steve Fortenberry

Board Member

Steve holds a Master’s of Divinity and a Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Literature. He brings extensive experience leading and educating youth groups. Currently, he serves as an associate pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Greenwood, MS. He founded a non-profit and has extensive experience with non-profit management and serving on nonprofit boards. As a board member, Steve is responsible for advocating on behalf of the proposed school and lending his non-profit start up expertise.
