New Charter School Expands its Team

Greenwood, MS—October 5, 2020 Leflore Legacy Academy, a free college preparatory school that opened in August, has expanded its staff with strategic new hires to ensure all students succeed.

This public charter middle school, founded and led by Greenwood native Dr. Tamala Boyd Shaw, provides equitable education options for children in the Mississippi Delta.

“Although our founding year looks different from what we envisioned due to COVID-19, we maintain our commitment to our families and to our scholars, whose future is at the heart of everything we do,” said Dr. Shaw, Executive Director and Head of School. “These new team members will help us deliver on our promise to prepare every student for college, career and beyond.”

The newly-hired team members are Iris Saffold, AmeriCorps Program Manager; EL’ Johnthan Holston, Operations & Maintenance Assistant; Haley Scott, Gifted & ACT Prep Instructor; and Maurice Cheeks, Administrative Assistant.

“We aim to create a culture of college going and college graduating students who will become productive and prepared citizens enjoying academic, social, and financial success,” Dr. Shaw said. “Every member of our staff plays a crucial role in making that vision a reality.”

Leflore Legacy Academy enrolled 125 sixth grade students this fall. Next year, seventh grade will be added. The mission of Leflore Legacy Academy is to equip and empower middle school students with a rigorous and relevant college preparatory education that is personalized for success in high school, college, and life.
